Rex Test Block Kits
To obtain accurate readings using a durometer, one must develop a proper feel for operating the gauge. These easy to use quick reference kits enable the user to develop a repeatable and appropriate technique by comparing results to the actual hardness of the individual test blocks. This is especially important for testing soft materials, which makes it possible to imbed the foot of the durometer into the test specimen, thus obtaining false readings.
These are not intended to be used for calibration purposes, but they do offer a quick check to ensure proper operation of the durometer. To make a simple operation check, take a reading on smooth glass or steel (WARNING: THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR TYPE D DUROMETERS - THE GAUGE MAY BE SEVERELY DAMAGED!). The gauge should read no more than 100 and no less than 99. In a Rex Durometer, the unique built-in linearity assures the gauge is in proper operation throughout the entire scale. Should a Rex Durometer not give the above reading on a smooth, hard surface, it may be assumed that the Durometer has been damaged, and it should be sent to Rex for inspection and/or repair.
The kits include a set of color-coded 2″x 2″ x 0.25″ 50 mm x 50 mm x 6 mm) specimens of varying hardness rubbers. There are seven increments ranging from 30 to 90 durometer in the Type A and Type M kits, and three blocks, at 20, 40, and 80 durometer in the Type D kit. All are supplied in custom made storage cases. NIST-traceable Certificates of Calibration are available for all three kits (items 26721, 26724, and 26728). Despite their stability, it is strongly recommended that the hardness of these test blocks be verified annually.
