Description: The blade of this unique applicator design measures only 0.5" x 0.5" x 2.5" (1.3cm x 1.3cm x 6.3cm). A 1.5" (3.8cm) wide precision ground gate is centered on each of the four edges. This restricted passage channels the flow of the liquid to be evaluated through the gate while metering the wet film thickness applied. It is intended as an easier and less time-consuming alternative to Mayer rods and Bird-bar style applicators. These tools can produce high quality drawdowns in a confined area, making direct benchtop testing of inks and coatings a reality (for best results, we strongly suggest use of The Diversified Drawown Platform). Quick changeover from gate to gate allows direct comparisons of different coating thicknesses. Not recommended for flexo ink proofing.
Use: The wet film thickness (WFT) applied can be varied, based the angle at which the tool is held (please see the figure at right); a 45° angle produces the greatest clearance, yielding a wet film approximately equal to the depth of the gate. By holding the ACCU COAT Applicator™ at more acute angles, the passage depth is reduced, resulting in a thinner coating. In theory, a 22° angle produces a wet film roughly half of gate depth. We do not recommend holding the tool at an angle steeper than 50°. Coating rheology affects WFT; critical applications should be checked with a precise WFT gage such as those shown here.
